This Yukata features traditional block print cotton fabric base, with morning glory pattern in purple and golden yellow as contrast to each other, plus turquoise to indigo colour grading leaves to perfect the colour palette.
The morning glory was the symbol of summer in Edo period. The flower has very brief yet strong and resplendent blooms, which recalls the flash of firework in summer. Therefore morning glory became a very classic and long lasting favourite motif for summer yukata first and then kimono in general.
In the Tale of Genji, Lady Asagao (Lady Morning Glory) is the daughter of Prince Momozono Shikibukyo no Miya, Emperor Fujitsubo’s younger brother, and thus Hikaru Genji’s cousin. Her name derives from an anecdote in which Genji sent her a poem with a morning glory flower attached.
The purplish blue colour base is a common colour of the flower itself as well, therefore the whole colour scheme is a perfect example of smart design with true appreciation of nature.
